Jeanne Socrates has abandoned her attempt to become the oldest person to circumnavigate solo and unassisted because of repairs to her yacht, Nereida.
Jeanne Socrates will have to wait in her effort to become the oldest person to sail around the world.
The 74-year-old English sailor originally set out from Victoria Oct. 19 but turned back after her boat was damaged in a storm. She was off again Nov. 13, only to run into more storm-related damage and decide Saturday to stop her journey about 300 nautical miles from San Diego.
Jeanne said in her online log that she made “a painful but unavoidable decision”.
“Feeling very disheartened and sad,” she said. “So many people have been so supportive and helpful in so many ways, for which I am deeply appreciative. Thanks to you all!”
