The First Hybrid Electric Nautor Swan 88 Launched

Nautor Swan has launched the Swan 88 at the Boatbuilding Technology Centre in Pietarsaari, Finland. This yacht introduces a hybrid electric propulsion system, developed in collaboration with Torqeedo. The design team includes Germàn Frers handling Naval Architecture, Misa Poggi overseeing interior design, and Lucio Micheletti from Micheletti + Partners managing the exterior styling.

Swan’s involvement in the maxi yachts segment started in the 1970s, with the launch of Sayula II, and since then more than 15 Swan maxi models have been designed, resulting in the production of 100 yachts above 24m.

But the Finnish brand’s landmark Maxi moment happened in 2010 with the launch of the Swan 115, which has a hull design inspired by the big ocean racers, a maximum beam point repositioned far aft to allow a much more stable heeling of the boat, twin rudders and an interior design that prioritizes volume and comfort.

Swan 88, the design

The design of the Swan 88 features a coachroof inspired by wind shapes, incorporating streamlined and simple lines. This is complemented by a transom that opens up to a ‘Beach Club’ swim platform, emphasizing the yacht’s design focus on enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Natural light is a significant aspect of the yacht’s interior design, with an atrium-style companionway and expansive windows that illuminate the living spaces.

From a compliance and operational perspective, the Swan 88 adheres to the 24-metre load line length which aligns with MCA light charter regulations. This adherence simplifies the charter certification process and is aimed at reducing operating costs for owners.

The yacht’s underbody is engineered with a moderate draught fin T-keel of 4 meters and twin rudders, designed to improve safety and balance while sailing. The construction includes a hull and deck made from full carbon fiber epoxy, utilizing Sprint® lamination technology and the yard’s proprietary carbon mold technology.

“The Swan 88 marks an important mi/estone far the shipyard’s production. lt’s the first hybrid propu/sion yacht, which has seen a constant col/aboration with Torqeedo and has contributed to the study and development of the same features across the entire range, not just maxi yachts.” says Giovanni Pomati,Nautor Group CEO. “This important new model, of which we wi/1 /aunch the second unit in a few days,represents Swan’s 360-degree essence, the DNA that far 58 years has made our boats recognizableworldwide, and we are very proud of it.”

The Swan 88 is scheduled for its official world debut at the 2024 Cannes Yachting Festival from September 10-15, followed by the Monaco Yacht Show from September 25-28.
