As summer approaches, the picturesque town of Cascais, Portugal is gearing up for a grand display of sailing prowess and environmental advocacy with the 5th edition of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy 2024. Scheduled for July 5th to 7th, 2024, this event promises to be a key highlight on the European sailing calendar.
The regatta, held in collaboration with the Clube Naval de Cascais, will feature over 150 sailing boats, including both traditional and high-performance cruisers. This year, excitement is particularly high with the introduction of the J70 class, joining the lineup of NHC, ORC, SB20, Snipe, Finn, and Optimist classes.
The Mirpuri Foundation, a well-known advocate for marine conservation, uses this event to collect crucial funds for ocean health projects. Remarkably, until June 6th, 2024, the Foundation will cover half of all entry fees, boosting participation and support for its cause. The already impressive list of 140 registered boats hints at a fiercely competitive race ahead.
Cascais is not only a stunning locale but also a strategic choice for the regatta. Nestled on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, its waters are influenced by the reliable breezes where the Azores High meets the low pressure from the Iberian Peninsula, making it an ideal spot for yacht racing.
This year’s race will also see the return of local heroes, the Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team. Champions of the 2020 and 2023 editions, they will once again compete on their VO65 yacht, “Racing for the Planet”, continuing their mission to spotlight environmental issues through sport.
The regatta will officially begin on July 6 with ceremonial cannon fire from the Portuguese Navy, marking the start of intense competition across all classes. This includes the popular Optimist class, crucial for nurturing young talent through the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Academy.
The event will conclude on July 7 with the awarding of the Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy and 35 other prizes. Not to be missed is the awarding of the Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award and the perpetual trophy, crafted with gold and silver by esteemed Portuguese jewelers Leitão & Irmão.
Environmental sustainability is central to the event, which proudly upholds a policy against the use of single-use plastics. Through this and other initiatives, the Mirpuri Foundation continues to use competitive sailing as a platform to promote marine conservation and inspire change.
The Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy not only tests the skill of its participants but also underscores the urgent need for environmental stewardship, setting an example for regattas worldwide. As we look forward to the thrills and spills of July’s competition, it’s clear that this regatta is more than just a race; it’s a call to action for the preservation of our oceans.
