JJ Giltinan Trophy, Sydney, Australia
5-13th March
The premier 18-foot skiff event in the world, the JJ Giltinan trophy, attracts some of the world’s best sailors to Sydney every year and it is difficult to imagine a better backdrop for the event. The boats are fast, notoriously difficult to keep upright and reward a crew who know when to push and when to take their feet of the gas. Being so tricky to sail, the wannabe winners of this prestigious event have to be consistent across the regatta if they want a shot a winning. With the event a who’s who of southern hemisphere sailing stars, competition is always fierce with sailors and non-sailors alike all tuning in to watch the action. Who will stand on the top step on the podium after racing on the 13th?
Sail GP Finale, San Francisco, USA
26-27th March
After a 7 event series spanning across nearly a year, Sail GP’s 8 teams will descend upon San Francisco for the all-important final act of the season. The format is unique, in that the top 3 teams at the end of the penultimate race in San Francisco, will go head-to-head in a single race shootout for the $1m prize purse and the Sail GP Season 2 title – one of the biggest accomplishments in sailing, despite the series’ relative youth. San Francisco is a familiar venue for many of the sailors after the 2013 America’s Cup, with skippers Jimmy Spithill, Nathan Outeridge and Ben Ainslie, amongst others, all key players in their respective team’s battle for the cup 9 years ago. Can Tom Slingsby compete the double and win two Sail GP titles on the bounce, or will a different team take the title?
Etchell’s Sid Doren Memorial & Coral Reef Cup, Miami, USA
19-20th & 25-27th March
Despite sailing at a slightly slower pace than both the F50 catamaran and 18-foot skiff, racing in the Etchell class is no less competitive. Two major events on the Etchell Calendar take place in March, as the class’ loyal group of competitors head to Miami for both the Sid Doren Memorial and the Coral Reef Cup. The fleets for both events feature America’s Cup skippers, Olympians and World Champions, most of whom are preparing hard for the Etchell’s World Championships in Cowes later this year. Miami provides sailors from further afield sunshine and champagne sailing conditions and is a favourite amongst owners and professional sailors alike. Team’s will be itching to get out onto the turquoise waters off Key Biscayne.
