The first Swan 51 represented a milestone in the history of the Nautor Swan brand. Launched in 1981, this model marked a turning point for the Swan brand, as it was the first vessel to bear the signature of the renowned naval architect German Frers, closing an era of hulls designed by Sparkman & Stephens.
The present-day Swan 51 fits between the current Swan 48 and Swan 55, completing the range of “small” performance cruisers. Designed to be fast and enjoyable, it offers practical solutions that make the yacht comfortable and easy to navigate both along the coast and on long voyages. The Swan 51 is available in three different configurations: Standard (for cruising), Comfort, and Sport, which adapt to the owner’s sailing style.
The double rudder allows for optimal boat handling, preventing any tendency to broach even when turning at a heeling angle of 20 degrees, which the hull is optimized for to offer maximum performance. Both rudder shafts are mounted in watertight compartments to minimize potential damage or flooding following a collision at sea. Additionally, the twin-blade rudder also allows for cruising in shallow waters, as well as the optional reduced draft keel (2.05m) compared to the standard keel (2.45m). An even more performance-oriented keel with a depth of 3.2m is also available as an option.
The Swan 51 offers three different deck and sail plan configurations, allowing owners to customize their yacht to meet their needs.
The standard version, designed for cruising, provides a proven and practical setup with a sail area of 147.1 square meters and everything needed to enjoy sailing and life at sea with friends and family.
The Comfort version includes a series of options designed for enjoyable and easy navigation combined with 360-degree cockpit protection. These options include the Arch Concept, a roll bar that acts as a guide for the mainsheet, to keep the cockpit clear, and as support for the bimini. This configuration is also offered with an in-mast furling mainsail of 145.8 square meters and a self-tacking jib.
Lastly, there’s the Sport version, dedicated to those seeking performance, which includes a carbon fiber mast that is 1.5 meters taller to support the increased mainsail area of 161.2 square meters, and an adjustable backstay, alternatively to the fixed one, if choosing the square top mainsail.
Swan 51, the interiors
The main salon is spacious and welcoming, illuminated by natural light coming from the numerous windows in the coachroof and hull. The position of the chart table and main table, as well as seating and storage areas, can be configured according to the owner’s preferences. The galley, inspired by successful layouts seen in the Swan 48 and 55, offers services and appliances comparable to those found in a household.
The three-cabin interior layout includes a spacious forward owner’s cabin with a private bathroom and separate shower. Aft are the VIP and guest cabins, with a shared bathroom and shower. The soundproofed engine room is easily accessible, with ample space for an optional generator.
The style and finishes, in wood, fabrics, and leather, are offered in a variety of moods conceived by interior designer Misa Poggi.
