In this episode of Sailing Nandji, I have been going on about upgrading our stainless davits so I have a place to carry my surfboards, but this is not the only reason for the upgrade. The structure was only attached through a series of clamps and not welded strong so I wanted to reinforce the entire area to spread the load of the dinghy when it is hoisted.
On top of the davits is an array of solar panels which help to power our boat as we 100% rely on solar for charge. When we first bought Nandji 5 years ago, these 3 old 80 watt panels were fixed to the davits, whilst they provide small amounts of power, this space can be better utilised to harness more energy.
With the dimensions of the solar panel in hand, I came up with a design to complete our new davits. The only problem is, explaining this to someone who speaks a different language…
