Sailing Nandji Ep. 89: in this episode we are in Kavieng, Papua New Guinea. We visit the local market and prepare for our next passage. Heading out to sea we embark on a 400nm to the remote Hermit Islands.
These islands are a long way from anywhere and very remote. If we need help, it is not coming anytime soon! Sailing so close to the equator means long periods of no wind and flapping sails. Lots of squalls with heavy rain and strong winds followed by hot clear skies.
Most people imagine that the ocean is full of huge waves bigger than sky scrapers and strong winds like a non stop cyclone. In the doldrums, it is more like a desolate desert leaving you pining for a breeze…
We love our time sailing offshore, as there are always highlights and tough times on long passages, that is what makes sailing offshore such a memorable experience!
