In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we check out of New Caledonia and set sails to a new country.
We leave Noumea with some challenging trade wind conditions. Strong winds force us to hide away for the afternoon and night sail to reach anchorages to wait for tidal currents to allow us to exit reef passes.
We need all the elements in our favour to move in the right direction! Once clear of the outer lagoon, we set our sails and begin the open water crossing through Loyalty islands. We have a long period of time with little wind and end up drifting at sea.
The wind returns and we sail across the deep Hebrides trench. This trench is over 6000m deep in places! We finally arrive to our destination of Tanna Island, Vanuatu. It was a 3 day and 2 long night journey, hand steering 250 nautical miles with just the two of us.
