Doug Zurn 52 ft concept, classic design and modern concept

This Doug Zurn 52 foot concept is designed as an offshore capable fast cruiser for a couple, couple with guests, or small family. The perfectly proportioned sweeping sheer is a Zurn trademark and provides for excellent, dry performance through waves.

Her large main and small jib will make singlehanded sailing easy and with the optional self-tacking jib make beating upwind into a 15-knot breeze through a narrow bay a simple, fun exercise with each tack requiring only the turn of the wheel. The retractable sprit shown here allows for incredible off-wind speed with a large asymmetrical spinnaker flying from the extended pole.

The dual helm layout and low coachroof provide exceptional driver visibility from either the weather or leeward helm stations. Additionally passage aft to the opening transom is unencumbered by a central helm location and the very large wheel it would necessitate. All sheets are lead to the helm stations adding to the 52’s shorthanded sailing prowess.

This 52 hull design is dominated by her luscious sheer which is as functional as it is good looking. From that clear point of introduction sailors will see her clean standing and running rigging layout, her fast underwater shape, and her ability to carry large downwind sails with or without a retracting sprit.” This is the first comment according to designer Doug Zurn. “This yacht is designed to sail, and sail well, with little stress to boat and crew. Belowdecks she will encase the crew in comfort, functionality, and the ability to customize to great extent. She’s a sailor’s yacht.”

THE INTERIORS

Down below the Doug Zurn 52 concept is set up for two couples with a large forward cabin with pullman double and its own head with separate shower in the bow. Aft and to starboard is a large, double-berth quarter cabin. The galley can be arranged as a super secure L-shape with settee forward, or the galley can be along the starboard side, with a larger settee across to port. The second head, aft to port, would be the guest/day head and would work exceptionally well as a wet hanging locker when conditions demand.

This 52-foot design can go in many directions with interior design and deck layout. The sea-kindly hull will provide excellent speed under sail and under power. She’ll be easily driven keeping rig loads to a minimum and under power provide excellent fuel economy. Zurn Yacht Design prides itself on working in tight unity with the customer to create the perfect boat for him or her. They listen long and hard before moving forward together through the design and build process.
